Our Team Culture is Our Competitive Edge

SJ Carlson is one of the last standing locally owned fire protection companies in the Rockford and Greater Chicago region.

We pride ourselves on being a family owned business that delivers high quality craftsmanship and unbeatable service to continue our tradition of high standards for every project.

When selecting a fire suppression company, you’re going to appreciate that we value quality and precision over profit margin.

Fire Suppression is Our Family Tradition

Isn’t it every family’s dream to discuss fire sprinklers around the dinner table? That’s how our owner, Peter Rockwell was raised – echoing generations of men in the industry.

Peter’s great-grandfather Simon Carlson opened his own plumbing business called SJ Carlson in 1944. The shop soon expanded to offer plumbing, heat, and HVAC services. When Roland Carlson (Pete’s grandfather) took over the business, SJ Carlson & Sons had become a full service mechanical shop.

Roland Carlson later sold the business locally to Dave Nelson of Nelson Carlson. Paul Rockwell (Pete’s father) created and managed their fire sprinkler division for many years, and eventually bought the sprinkler division from the Nelsons.

He opened SJ Carlson Fire Protection in 1993 and we’ve been here ever since!

Peter Rockwell

Peter Rockwell began working at SJ Carlson in 2003 as a 1st year apprentice. For 4 years he worked in fabrication and installation, from crawling through hot attics to wading waist-deep in ditches.

SJ Carlson is MBE State Certified in Illinois.

MBE Certified

This certification matters because we want our customers to be able to get as many different tax breaks as possible. We also want our customers to be eligible for state or federal grant money as a result of our state certification. This can drastically offset your investment for fire suppression.

When you choose SJ Carlson, our services can meet 100% of what the state requires. But we’re not a middle man for our services. Unlike other MBE certified contractors who sub out their work, our in-house fabrication and installation team completes all our projects.

All Estimates are Free and Fast.

We’ve never charged for an estimate and don’t plan to do so. We look forward to visiting your job site and making recommendations for the best fire sprinkler system for your application.

Sometimes we even provide free on-site estimates depending on the magnitude of the work being requested. This almost defies the conventional industry standards!

No job is too large or too small for us to quote.
